ENERGY MARKET STUDY

CLN constantly surveys the global energy markets on a regular basis to ensure that we are up to date and deliver the most reliable information. We are raising the bar for business intelligence in the energy sector, and we work directly with our clients to meet their research objectives.

We have been involved in several energy market study in Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and Algeria and provide expert services in the following areas:

  • Gas market study
  • Energy access study
  • Identification of potential gas utilization projects for carbon financing opportunities.
  • Assessing the status of gas flaring in selected countries, regulations and policies that support the achievement of flare reduction and options to reduce flaring in line with achieving countries Nationally Determined Contribution (climate plan) objectives.

CARBON FINANCING

The carbon market provides a useful instrument for addressing GHG emissions in a way that provides an economic incentive for fostering low carbon transition. To date the domestic and the international market continue to serve as a support mechanism in the implementation of low carbon-based project. It is expected that Article 6 under the Paris Agreement will further drive both climate and carbon financing and one that countries and companies globally needs to be well positioned to key into this opportunity.

As an organization well positioned on climate change issues, we work with CL-Invest and CL Oslo on carbon financing project activities. We possess the expertise in identifying and developing GHG emission reductions as well as the methodological tools and standards used to quantify the emission reduction necessary for obtaining carbon financing. Our expertise is in identification, development, and implementation of GHG emission mitigation projects. We have a competitive advantage in this area of environmental consulting.

We work with both private and public institutions on exploring opportunities in the ever-growing carbon market. Our expertise in this subject area includes,

  • Identification and development of carbon finance projects and other project-based emission reduction projects.
  • Transparency, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) in the relevant NDC sector.
  • Support in NDC development and assessing the role of exploring result-based carbon financing.
  • Development of project opportunities under new crediting mechanisms such as the EU Fuel Quality Directive.

Working with our partner company (CL-Invest Norway), we have also expanded our scope to cover new areas such as:

  • Consultancy services on the deployment of Vapor Recovery Units (VRU) projects
  • Consultancy services on the development of nature-based projects.

CLIMATE POLICY/MRV

Climate issues are of growing interest and this has necessitated that nations continue to work together in addressing the rising impacts of climate change. Companies are now more inclined to policy development on climate change and the need to develop strategies that will support low carbon transition objectives. At CLN, our role over the past years is to work with both private and public entities in the development of policies and strategies that will support implementing mitigation actions and enhance reduction of GHG emission in the energy sector through effective set up of a transparent measurement, reporting and verification system needed for enhancing transparency and the objective of the Paris Agreement.

Our team provides support to clients in the following subject areas:

  • Climate Change Strategy development
  • Development of Fugitive Methane Policies/Guidelines and Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) program in the oil and gas sector
  • Carbon Markets (Compliance and Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCM)) and Carbon Pricing
  • Development of Measurement Reporting and Verification (MRV) Frameworks

CAPACITY BUILDING

Organize tailored workshops/capacity building services to support private and public institutions on climate change issues.

ENERGY TRANSITION PLAN

Energy Transition Plan (ETP) has been an integral part necessary in aligning with the global and national efforts towards achieving a Net Zero ambition and other wider climate targets. We are of the knowledge that a comprehensive ETP is prerequisite to low-carbon future, and we ensure that the plans are holistically developed accounting for any pending impact on the people and the planet.

We have recently developed ETP plans for four leading oil and gas companies in Nigeria, and we leverage on our expertise and consultancy experience in the energy market in developing an ETP which encompasses:

  • Organization’s ambition for low carbon development
  • Commitments to Sustainable energy future
  • Energy Transition Strategy
  • Steps towards a Net Zero

ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL, AND GOVERNANCE (ESG) AND SUSTAINABILITY REPORTS

Nigeria enacted the Climate Change Act which mandates sustainability reporting for businesses with more than 50 employees. In recent years, organizational commitment to sustainability translates to long-lasting business environments especially in the energy industry hence the importance of developing ESG and Sustainability Reports.

CLN develops ESG with frameworks that are embedded into the organization’s strategy. This we believe will generate value for stakeholders.

We have expertise in both ESG and Sustainability reporting which are closely intertwined but varies as ESG rating measures environmental and social impacts and the effectiveness of corporate governance in managing them while Sustainability covers the durability of a business over time, to generate long-term value.

In developing ESG strategies or reports, we primarily focus on:

  • Defining the materiality assessments
  • Development of an ESG strategy framework
  • Engagement to realize ESG Commitments
  • Setting ESG Goals, Metrics, Targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

GHG INVENTORY AND MANAGEMENT PLANS

CLN has converged its capability in the development of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventories and Inventory Management Plans (IMP) for organizations within the oil and gas sector. The IMP describes series of details and processes necessary for completing a high-quality, corporate-wide GHG inventory across companies. It is employed to institutionalize the process for collecting, calculating, and maintaining GHG data across the entire value chains of a company.

Using standardized methods, we have developed GHG inventories covering for Scope 1 and 2 for leading oil and gas companies in Nigeria. We have also taken a deep dive in assisting companies in accounting and reporting for their scope 3 emissions.
